A growing share of buyer questions now get answered inside ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews, never reaching a blue link. Here is how to become the source they cite.

The click is disappearing. Your buyer used to search, scan ten links, and pick one. Now they ask an AI and read the answer it writes back, and increasingly they never click through at all.

This is the single biggest shift in discovery since mobile. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "what is the best tool for X," the model does not hand back a ranked list of ten websites. It writes a paragraph, names a few options, and moves on. If your product is one of the names, you win the consideration with zero clicks spent. If it is not, you were never in the room.

Ranking number one no longer guarantees the visit.

Classic SEO optimizes for a position on a results page. But when Google shows an AI Overview above the results, the answer sits on top and the blue links get pushed down the fold. You can hold the number one organic spot and still lose the buyer to a summary that quoted a competitor. Position is no longer the finish line, being quoted is.

GEO is the work of becoming the cited source.
