How much traffic do AI Overviews take?
Published studies put the drop in organic click-through rate on AI Overview queries between roughly 47% and 61%. Ahrefs measured −58% for the top result, Seer Interactive −61% across queries, and Pew found 8% of users click a result when an AI summary appears against 15% without one.
The method, in the open.
For every query you flag as showing an AI answer, the calculator estimates:
- Clicks at risk = clicks the query earns without an AI answer × the study's CTR reduction.
- Citation upside = clicks kept if your page is cited inside the answer. Seer Interactive found cited brands earn 35% more organic clicks than uncited brands on the same queries.
You choose whether your current clicks already include the AI answer's effect (the usual case for queries where it shows today) or represent the "before" picture. The Ahrefs option applies a position-specific reduction (−58% at position 1, −50.8% at 2, −46.4% at 3 and below); Seer and Pew apply one reduction to every flagged query; or set your own.
Flag queries one by one, by keyword pattern (questions such as "how", "what", "best" are most likely to trigger AI answers), or apply a blanket share. The CSV is parsed in your browser and never uploaded.
What the numbers look like.
Hypothetical example. A site gets 12,000 clicks a month from 300 queries. Its 120 question-style queries earn 5,000 of those clicks, and all show an AI Overview today.
Using Seer's −61%, those 5,000 clicks would have been about 12,800 without the AI answer, so roughly 7,800 clicks a month are lost to zero-click. Being cited inside the answer on those queries is worth about 35% more clicks than not being cited: around 1,750 extra clicks a month. That gap, not the loss, is what to plan around.
What this is based on
- AI Overviews cut click-through for the position-1 result by 58% (position 2: −50.8%, position 3: −46.4%). Ahrefs via MediaNama
- Organic CTR on AI Overview queries fell from 1.76% to 0.61% (−61%); brands cited in the overview earned 35% higher organic CTR (0.70% vs 0.52%). Seer Interactive
- Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. Pew Research Center
- Google: there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google Search Central
What it does not tell you
- These are vendor and research studies with different samples and methods. The result is an estimate to plan with, not an audit of your exact losses.
- Search Console does not report which queries showed an AI Overview. Your flags (or the keyword pattern) are an approximation; check important queries by hand.
- CTR impact varies by query type, device, brand strength and country. Branded queries are usually affected far less.
- Search Console exports cap at 1,000 rows in the interface. Use the API or Looker Studio for larger sites.
Questions people ask.
What is a zero-click search?
A search where the user gets an answer on the results page, from an AI Overview, featured snippet or knowledge panel, and does not click through to any website.
Which study should I use?
Use Ahrefs if your traffic depends on top-3 rankings, since it varies by position. Use Seer for a broad, cross-industry average. Pew measures user behaviour rather than CTR and gives a similar, slightly gentler figure. Running all three gives you a range.
How do I export my queries from Search Console?
In Search Console, open Performance → Search results, choose a date range, open the Queries tab and click Export → Download CSV. Paste the Queries file here, or upload it.
Are AI Mode results included?
Search Console includes AI Mode in the Web search type but does not separate it. Treat AI Mode as another AI answer surface when you flag queries; early experiments show it removes even more clicks than AI Overviews.
How do I win the clicks back?
Get cited inside the answer. Lead pages with a direct, self-contained answer, back it with specific data and sources, keep pages crawlable and indexed, and cover the follow-up questions buyers ask.
Is my Search Console data uploaded?
No. The file is read and processed in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is sent to our servers.
