Topics to answer, biggest gap first
How do I find question keywords in Google Search Console?
Export the Queries table from the Performance report and filter for queries that start with or contain question words such as how, what, why, which, can, is, best and vs. Then sort by impressions and compare each query's CTR with other queries at a similar position to find the ones you appear for but don't win.
The method, in the open.
1. Find the questions. A query counts as a question if it starts with or contains a question word (how, what, why, when, where, which, who, can, should, is, does, how much), a comparison (vs, versus, difference between, better), a list intent (best, top, ideas, tips, examples), or a question mark. Common Hindi and Hinglish question words (kya, kaise, kyun, kab, kahan, kaun) are included too.
2. Benchmark against your own site. Instead of a generic click-through curve, the tool takes the median CTR of all your queries in the same position band (1 to 3, 4 to 10, 11 to 20, below 20). That is what a query at that position normally earns on your site.
3. Score the gap. Missed clicks = impressions × the band's median CTR − actual clicks, never below zero. Questions ranking on page one with a big gap are answer gaps: you are visible but an AI Overview, a snippet or a competitor takes the click. Questions below position 10 are ranking gaps: you need a better page, not a better paragraph.
4. Group and plan. Questions that share their main words are grouped into topics. Each group gets a suggested format based on the question type: a 40 to 60 word definition, numbered steps, a comparison table, a list, or a yes/no answer with the reason.
What the numbers look like.
Using the sample data. A site has 30 queries in its export; 17 of them, leaving out the brand name, are questions. "how to track chatgpt traffic in ga4" ranks at 2.4 with 3,100 impressions and a 1.2% CTR, while the site's other queries in positions 1 to 3 earn a median of 8.2%. That is about 216 missed clicks: an answer gap. The fix is a self-contained, step-by-step answer directly under a heading that matches the question, not a new article.
"what is generative engine optimization" ranks at 14.2. That is a ranking gap: no paragraph tweak will win a click from page two, so it needs a dedicated, better page.
What this is based on
- CTR in Search Console is clicks divided by impressions; average position in the table is the average for that query or page. Search Console Help: Performance report
- When impressions hold but clicks fall, Google suggests reviewing your titles and snippets. Google Search Central: Debugging drops in Search traffic
- Organic CTR on queries with an AI Overview fell from 1.76% to 0.61%, while brands cited in the overview earned 35% more organic clicks than uncited ones. Seer Interactive
- Google limited FAQ rich results to authoritative government and health sites in 2023, so visible question-and-answer content matters more than the markup. Google Search Central blog
What it does not tell you
- Search Console hides rare queries for privacy, and the interface export stops at 1,000 rows. Long-tail questions may be missing; the API or Looker Studio gets more.
- Your own median CTR is a benchmark, not a law. Branded queries and queries with shopping or video results behave differently, so exclude your brand name.
- Grouping is by shared words, so two phrasings of the same question with different words may land in different groups.
- The tool cannot see whether a query shows an AI Overview. Search the biggest gaps yourself before rewriting.
Questions people ask.
How do I export queries from Search Console?
Open Performance, then Search results, choose a date range (the last 3 months works well), open the Queries tab and use Export to download a CSV. Paste or upload the Queries file here.
What is an answer gap?
A question you already rank for on page one that earns fewer clicks than your other queries at that position. Usually an AI Overview, featured snippet or a better competitor answer is taking the click.
Should I write a new article for every question?
No. Group related questions and answer them on the page that already ranks, under a heading that matches the question. Only questions where you rank below position 10 usually need a new or better page.
What answer format should I use?
Match the question: a 40 to 60 word definition for "what is", numbered steps for "how to", a table for "vs" and comparisons, a list for "best" and "ideas", and a direct yes or no with the reason for "can" and "is" questions.
Is my Search Console data uploaded?
No. The file is read and analysed in your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers.
