How to appear in AI Overviews: Google's own guide, step by step.

How to appear in AI Overviews: Google's own guide, step by step.

How to appear in AI Overviews used to be a guessing game. In 2026 Google answered it in its own documentation. Here is what that guide says, step by step, with what it means in practice.

Step 1: be eligible

  1. Indexed and snippet-eligible. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
  2. Included in Search generative AI. Since 31 August 2026 every Search Console property has a Search generative AI control under Settings. "Include" is the default; if someone switched it to "Exclude", your content can't appear. See the control and report.
  3. Crawlable. Googlebot not blocked, pages returning 200, JavaScript that Google can process.

Step 2: understand how AI Overviews pick pages

Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. They use retrieval-augmented generation (grounding) to pull relevant pages from the index, and query fan-out: related searches the model runs to gather more results. So the pages that rank well for the question and its follow-ups are the candidates. See query fan-out.

Google warns against creating separate pages for every fan-out query variation: doing it to manipulate AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy.

Step 3: AI overview optimization that Google endorses

Google AI overview optimization, in Google's own words, is still SEO. "AI Overviews SEO" is the same discipline applied to answers: these are the practices its guide recommends.

  • Non-commodity content. Google contrasts "7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers" with a first-hand account of a specific decision. Your own data, cases and experience are what stand out.
  • Clear structure for people. Sections and headings that make the page easy to follow.
  • Images and video that support the text; AI features can show them too.
  • Page experience: fast, works on every device, main content easy to find.
  • Structured data that matches the visible page. Useful for rich results, not required for AI features.
  • Local and shopping data: Google Business Profile and Merchant Center feeds help products and businesses appear.

Step 4: ignore the myths

TacticGoogle's position
llms.txt, Markdown, AI text filesNot needed; Google Search doesn't use them
"Chunking" content into tiny piecesNot required; there is no ideal length
Rewriting just for AI, chasing long-tail variantsNot needed; AI systems understand synonyms and meaning
Seeking inauthentic mentionsNot as helpful as it seems; spam systems apply
Special schema for AINone required

Google also calls "AEO" and "GEO", from its point of view, still SEO. That matches our honest take.

Step 5: measure

Use Search Console's Generative AI performance report for impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, and compare with clicks in the main report. Google warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Our zero-click calculator estimates what AI answers cost in clicks.
