ChatGPT now searches inside your site. Is your site ready to be searched?

Most GEO advice assumes the AI searches the web and picks a result. Since August, ChatGPT often picks a domain first and then searches inside it.

What query fan-out is

When you ask ChatGPT a question that needs fresh information, it doesn't run your exact words as one search. It writes several searches of its own, runs them, and builds the answer from the combined results. That is fan-out. Ahrefs found cited page titles matched these fan-out queries even more closely than they matched the user's prompt (similarity 0.656 against 0.602), which tells you the background searches matter as much as the question.

What changed on 8 August

Promptwatch's tracking showed the share of ChatGPT fan-out queries using the site: operator jumping from about 0.37% to 16.8% in a day, while the average number of searches per response rose from about 1.08 to 1.83. ChatGPT kept its general searches and added domain-scoped ones on top. The same week, Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations collapsed.

A domain-scoped search looks like site:zeevron.com android vitals threshold. The model has decided a domain is worth checking and wants the best page on it.

Why this matters

StepWhat decides itYour lever
1. Domain chosenBrand recognition, mentions, earlier resultsBe known for the topic: mentions, links, consistent expertise
2. Page foundIndex coverage, title and description matchOne clear page per question, indexed, with a literal title
3. Page citedClear answer near the top, relevanceAnswer first, then detail

Step 2 is new and mostly ignored. If ChatGPT searches your domain for "refund policy annual plan" and your answer sits in paragraph nine of a page titled "Billing", the scoped search may not surface it.

What to do

  1. One question, one page. Recurring questions about your product deserve their own URL with a title that states the question.
  2. Literal titles and descriptions. "How to cancel an annual plan" beats "Managing your subscription".
  3. Get indexed in both Google and Bing. We don't know which index serves ChatGPT's site: queries, and the honest answer is that it may vary (see does ChatGPT still use Bing). Submit sitemaps to both and use IndexNow for Bing.
  4. Let OAI-SearchBot in. Check robots.txt and your firewall with our AI crawler checker.
  5. Run the search yourself. Type site:yourdomain.com plus your ten most important questions into Google and Bing. If the right page isn't first, ChatGPT is unlikely to find it either.

This is one week of third-party data on a system that changes often. Treat the numbers as a signal, not a law, and recheck your own citations.
