What is a good ASO score?

On this checker, 71 or more means the fundamentals are in place and your next gains come from testing, localization and AI discovery. 41 to 70 usually means people find the listing but do not install, a conversion problem. 40 or below means the store is barely working for you, so almost every fix is upside.

How it works

The method, in the open.

Each store has its own twelve checks, because Google Play and the App Store index and rank different things. Google Play reads your full description for keywords; the App Store does not, and uses a hidden 100-character keyword field instead. Every check carries a published weight, and the weights add up to 100.

Your score is the sum of the weights you tick. Unticked checks become your fix-first list, ordered by weight, so the biggest gaps come first. When you paste an App Store link, we call Apple's public iTunes Lookup API and tick what can be verified (rating, recent update, languages); everything else stays your call. Google Play has no public metadata API, so its checks are self-reported, with live character counters for the title (30) and short description (80).

The full weighting table sits under the checker so you can see exactly why a check matters more than another.

Worked example

What the numbers look like.

Hypothetical example. A Google Play fitness app has a keyword in its title, a rating of 4.2 and replies to reviews, but its short description is a slogan, its screenshots are bare UI, it has never run a store listing experiment, and it uses no custom store listings.

It scores 54 / 100, "Findable, not chosen". Its fix-first list starts with the store listing experiment (10), the short description (10), screenshot text (10) and custom store listings (8). Those four fixes alone are worth 38 points, and all four are conversion work, not keyword work.

  • Google Play's public rating is weighted towards recent ratings. Play Console Help
  • Android vitals bad-behaviour thresholds: 1.09% user-perceived crash rate and 0.47% user-perceived ANR rate; above them, discoverability drops. Play Console Help
  • App Store app names can be up to 30 characters. App Store Connect Help
  • The App Store keyword field holds up to 100 bytes of comma-separated keywords. App Store Connect Help
  • The iTunes Search and Lookup API is free, needs no key, and Apple asks callers to cache results. Apple Performance Partners
Limitations

What it does not tell you

  • No keyword search volume or difficulty data. The checker tells you whether you are doing the right things, not which keywords to target.
  • Google Play checks are self-reported. Be strict with yourself; generous ticking only flatters the score.
  • App Store auto-checks read public data only. "Languages" counts the languages your app supports, which is a signal for, not proof of, a localized listing.
  • A high score is not a ranking guarantee. Category competition and your app's quality still decide outcomes.
31.7% listing conversion on a custom store listing, against 18.7% on the default listing, for a 440K MAU app. Read the case study →
FAQ

Questions people ask.

Is this ASO checker really free?

Yes. There is no signup and no email gate. Your answers stay in your browser; the only request we make is to Apple's public lookup API when you paste an App Store link.

Why are Google Play and the App Store scored separately?

They rank differently. Google Play indexes your full description and rewards stability through Android vitals, while the App Store relies on a hidden keyword field and subtitle. One shared checklist would mis-score both.

How is this different from AppTweak, AppDrift or Sonar?

Those tools grade metadata pulled from the store. This checker publishes the weight of every check, covers Play-specific levers such as custom store listings, vitals and the 2026 CTR metric, and links each gap to a real case study.

How often should I re-run the check?

After every listing change, and at least monthly. Both stores re-rank continuously, so a listing that scored well last quarter can slip as competitors improve.

What should I fix first?

Follow the fix-first list: it is ordered by weight. In our experience conversion gaps (screenshots, short description, experiments) pay back fastest because the traffic is already there.

Can you run the full audit for me?

Yes. The free ASO teardown goes through your listing line by line and comes back with rewritten metadata and creative direction, ready to ship.
