Ask Play: how Gemini rewrites your store listing, and how to control what it says.
Google Play now lets users ask questions on your listing and answers them with Gemini. There is no setting to switch it off. There is a way to write for it.
For ten years the store listing was a page you wrote and users read. With Ask Play it is a source that Gemini reads, and users read Gemini's version.
What Ask Play is
Ask Play is a Gemini-powered chat inside Google Play store listings, announced at Google I/O 2026. A user can ask "is there a free version?" or "does this work offline?" before installing, and Play also suggests questions. According to AppTweak's I/O write-up, answers draw on the app description, key features and the app's website, and Gemini reorders and rephrases that copy, prioritising what sits at the top of the description.
As of May 2026 most of these AI features were limited to English-language devices, EEA markets such as France and Germany were behind, and rollout varied from device to device because it is server-side.
What you can and can't control
Neither Google's announcement coverage nor the agency analyses we have read mention an opt-out, an editable answer or a preview tool. So you can't write Ask Play's answers. You can write everything it reads.
Write the listing as answers
Most descriptions are written to persuade: benefit, benefit, social proof. Ask Play needs facts it can lift. The fix is not to abandon persuasion but to make sure the facts are present, plain and early.
| Question users ask | Where the answer should live | Write it like this |
|---|---|---|
| Is it free? | First paragraph of the description | "Free to download. Premium unlocks X for ₹Y a month." |
| Who is it for? | Short description and first line | "For kids aged 6 to 10" / "For freelancers who invoice in INR" |
| Does it work offline? | Features list | "Works offline. Sync when you reconnect." |
| Which languages? | Features list and website | "Available in English, Hindi and Tamil." |
| Are there ads? | Description and Data safety | "No ads in the paid plan. Kids mode has no ads." |
| Is my data safe? | Data safety form and website privacy page | Same claims in both places, no contradictions |
Put the facts above the fold
If Gemini favours the top of the description, the first 300 or so characters carry more weight than ever. Lead with what the app does, for whom, and the price model. Move awards and press quotes lower.
One fact, one wording
If the listing says "unlimited projects" and the pricing page says "up to 10 projects on free", Ask Play may repeat either. Pick the true one and use it everywhere. We wrote a separate guide on aligning your website with your Play listing, because that is where most contradictions come from.
Answer complaints in the open
Review replies are public text about your app. Where a recurring complaint has been fixed, say so in the reply and in the release notes. AppTweak expects reviews to become a larger signal for these features over time.
Test it like a user
- On an English-language Android device in a market where Ask Play is live, open your listing.
- Ask the ten questions you see most in support tickets and reviews.
- Record each answer with the date. Mark it correct, vague or wrong.
- For every vague or wrong answer, find the source sentence (or the missing one) and fix it.
- Repeat monthly and after every listing change. Answers vary between sessions, so ask each question twice.
