ASO consultant, agency, freelancer or in-house: which should you hire?

All four can grow an app, and each fails in a predictable way. The right choice depends on who will actually ship the changes.

ASO consultant, agency, freelancer or in-house: which should you hire?

An ASO consultant, a freelancer, an agency and an in-house hire all promise more organic installs. The difference is who does the work and who keeps the knowledge. We sell the agency option, so judge the table on its reasoning.

When an ASO consultant makes sense

Choose a consultant when you have people who can ship, but no one who knows what to change. A one-off audit plus a prioritised plan can be great value. It fails if your developers and designers can't make room for the work.

When an ASO freelancer makes sense

Choose a freelancer for a task you can describe in one line: research keywords for one market, or redesign the first five screenshots. Ask for samples in your category and agree the deliverable first. ASO is ongoing, though, and a freelancer may not be around for the next round of testing.

When an agency makes sense

Choose an agency when the work spans metadata, creative, testing and localization and no one owns it. You are paying for coordination as much as skill. Ask who does the work and what ships each month. See what an ASO agency does, including pricing and red flags.

When to hire in-house

Hire in-house when store search is a major channel and there is a full-time job in it. The specialist keeps context that outsiders lose, but needs tools, design help and access to developers. The same trade-off shows up in in-house vs agency for GEO.

A quick way to choose

  1. Can your team ship store changes every month? If yes, a consultant may be enough.
  2. Is it one defined job? Use a freelancer.
  3. Ongoing work, nobody owns it? Use an agency.
  4. Is ASO a top-three channel for the long term? Plan an in-house hire, perhaps with an agency in the meantime.

How to test any ASO expert

  • Ask for a review of your listing before you sign anything. Run the ASO score tool yourself first, so you can judge the answer.
  • Ask how they would measure success, given that Play now reports CTR rather than conversion rate.
  • Ask about both stores. A subtitle and keyword field on iOS work nothing like Google Play's description.
  • Walk away from guaranteed rankings or bought reviews.

Questions people ask

What does an ASO consultant do?

Usually audits your listing, sets keyword and creative strategy and trains your team, leaving your team to implement. Some consultants also do hands-on work, so confirm the scope.

Is an ASO freelancer or an agency better?

A freelancer suits a defined job. An agency suits ongoing work across metadata, creative, testing and localization.

When should I hire an in-house ASO specialist?

When store search is a major long-term channel and there is a full-time job in it.

How do I vet an ASO expert?

Ask for category samples, a review of your listing, how they measure success and what ships each month. Avoid guaranteed rankings.
