ASO for India in 2026: regional languages, low-end phones and data-light listings.

India is a Google Play market with English, Hindi and Hinglish searches, phones with 1GB of RAM and users who share them. A playbook from a team that grew a portfolio there.

ASO for India in 2026: regional languages, low-end phones and data-light listings.

Most ASO guides treat India as "translate the listing into Hindi". That misses how Indians actually search, and the phones they search on.

The market in four facts

  • Google has about 95% of India's mobile OS market; iOS about 3.7% (Statcounter, as cited by AppTweak).
  • Google Play offers India listings in English (India), Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
  • Hindi is not the mother tongue for about 60% of Indians. A Hindi listing alone does not mean "localised for India".
  • Adoption is uneven: among top-10 apps, AppTweak counted Hindi listings for 8 of 10 in Music & Audio, 4 of 10 in Finance and 3 of 10 in Casual Games.

Three layers of language

LayerWhoWhat to do
English (India)Most smartphone users, including many who prefer other languages but keep the device in EnglishYour main listing. Use Indian English and Indian examples, not a copy of the US listing
HinglishUsers who type Hindi words in Latin scriptResearch transliterated terms and use them naturally in English listing text
Native scriptUsers whose device is set to Hindi, Tamil, Bengali and so onFull localised listings where your audience is concentrated

We go deeper on each in Hindi store listings and Hinglish keywords.

Build for the phone, not the flagship

In the Gyan Studios portfolio, about 38% of the target users ran phones with under 1GB of RAM and Android versions below 7.0. The first build, about 45MB, crashed on them, and early reviews were one-star performance complaints. The rebuild got the app under 22MB with Android 6.0 as the minimum, crash reports fell 91%, and ratings turned within ten days.

  • Keep the install small and say so if it is ("Under 25MB").
  • Watch Android vitals by device model; per-device thresholds hit hardest in India.
  • Mention offline support where true. Data-light is a feature people search for.

Make the listing locally specific

Indian listings convert better when they look Indian: local places, prices in rupees, Indian payment methods, festivals in seasonal creative. AppTweak documents examples from Google Maps Go, PhonePe and Rapido doing exactly this.

Where to start

  1. Rewrite the English (India) listing for Indian users first.
  2. Add Hinglish terms that research supports.
  3. Add one native-script listing where Play Console shows your audience is concentrated, measure, then expand.
  4. Fix device stability before any of the above if vitals are near the thresholds.

Questions people ask

Which Indian languages does Google Play support for store listings?

English (India), Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, among others available in Play Console.

Is a Hindi listing enough for India?

No. Hindi is not the mother tongue of about 60% of Indians, and many users keep their phones in English and search in Hinglish. Start with a strong English (India) listing.

Does app size matter for ASO in India?

Yes. Many users run low-RAM phones with limited storage and data. Large apps crash and get abandoned, which hurts ratings, vitals and conversion.
