Hindi store listings on Google Play: when they help and when they don't.

A Hindi listing reaches the users whose phones are set to Hindi. That is a real audience, but a narrower one than most teams assume. How to decide, write and test one.

"Add Hindi" is the first thing most teams do for India, and often the last. Done well it helps. Done as a machine translation, it can read worse than no translation at all.

Who actually sees it

Google Play shows a localised listing when it matches the user's device language. A Hindi listing is seen by people whose phones are set to Hindi. AppTweak notes that Indian scripts have 40 or more letters, which makes typing harder, and that many people keep English as their device language for that reason. So a Hindi listing reaches a real but specific segment, and your English (India) listing still carries most of the market.

When a Hindi listing is worth it

  • Your app's content or interface is available in Hindi.
  • Play Console shows a meaningful share of your audience in Hindi-speaking states.
  • Your category relies on trust or explanation, where reading in your own language matters.

If the app itself is English-only, a Hindi listing can set the wrong expectation and earn uninstalls and bad reviews. Say clearly in the Hindi listing which languages the app supports.

How to write it

  • Keep familiar English words. AppTweak found top apps commonly keep words like "booking", "free", "delivery" and "safe" in English.
  • Translate meaning, not words. Use a native speaker who knows the category. Literal machine translations of marketing copy read stiffly.
  • Localise the screenshots too. A Hindi listing with English-only screenshots is half done.
  • Don't mix scripts inside one field without a reason. AppTweak saw this rarely among top apps.

How to test it

Store listing experiments can run on localised listings. Otherwise, compare the Hindi listing's store listing CTR with the English (India) listing's over the same period, and watch install-to-uninstall and rating by language. Remember that CTR and conversion rate are not comparable across the July 2026 change.

Questions people ask

Who sees a Hindi listing on Google Play?

Users whose device language is set to Hindi. Users with English devices see your English (India) or default listing, even if they speak Hindi.

Should I translate my whole listing into Hindi?

Translate the meaning with a native speaker, keep familiar English terms such as "free" or "delivery", and localise screenshots. Only do it if the app supports Hindi or clearly says which languages it supports.

Do Hindi listings increase installs?

It depends on your audience and category. Test it: compare the Hindi listing's CTR and installs with the English (India) listing over the same period.
