How to get cited by ChatGPT: seven steps for your website.

Nobody outside OpenAI knows the full citation logic, and OpenAI's crawler docs don't explain it. What is documented is how to become eligible. The rest is evidence and patience.

How to get cited by ChatGPT: seven steps for your website.

How to get cited by ChatGPT comes down to two jobs: be eligible for its search, then be the clearest source on the question. The first is documented by OpenAI. The second is where the work is.

How to get cited by ChatGPT: start with access

OpenAI botWhat it doesWhat to do
OAI-SearchBotSurfaces websites in ChatGPT search featuresAllow it, plus OpenAI's published IP ranges
GPTBotCrawls content that may be used to train modelsYour choice; it doesn't control search
ChatGPT-UserVisits pages for user-initiated actionsDon't block it at the firewall by accident

OpenAI says opted-out sites will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they may still appear as navigational links, and that robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to apply. Check yours with the AI crawler checker, and see OAI-SearchBot vs GPTBot.

The seven steps

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your CDN or firewall. Security rules block more bots than robots.txt does.
  2. Serve the answer in HTML. If the text only appears after JavaScript runs, a crawler may never read it. See why ChatGPT may not see your React site.
  3. Be indexed on the web generally. See what powers ChatGPT search, and don't ignore Bing.
  4. Answer first. Put the direct answer in the opening lines of the section. See answer-first content.
  5. Add evidence. Sourced statistics, attributed quotes and links to primary sources. Score a page with the AI citability checker.
  6. Cover the sub-questions. ChatGPT can run several searches for one prompt. See fan-out queries.
  7. Earn mentions elsewhere. How to get mentioned by ChatGPT is partly an off-site job. See brand mentions vs backlinks.

What the evidence says works

The best public evidence is the GEO paper, which rewrote pages and measured visibility in generated answers. Adding citations, quotations and statistics did best, with gains of up to 40%, and keyword stuffing offered little to no improvement. It was a controlled benchmark rather than a test on ChatGPT itself, so read it as direction. For more, see how AI engines choose sources.

How to get your brand cited by ChatGPT, and prove it

  • Write 30 to 50 prompts your buyers actually ask, and run them on a schedule. Use our free tracker.
  • Record whether you are cited, mentioned or absent, and who appears instead.
  • Check referral traffic with the GA4 AI traffic regex. See five ways to check.

Answers vary between runs and users, so one screenshot proves little. Be wary of anyone guaranteeing citations. Our GEO service reports on prompt-set trends for that reason.

Questions people ask

How do I get cited by ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot, serve your content in HTML, answer questions directly, back claims with sources and statistics, and earn mentions on other sites. Then track a fixed prompt set over time.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT citing me?

OpenAI treats them separately: GPTBot relates to model training, and OAI-SearchBot controls appearing in ChatGPT search answers.

How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT?

There is no published timeline. OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to apply, but earning citations depends on your content and competition.

Can I pay to be cited by ChatGPT?

Citations are not something OpenAI's crawler documentation offers for sale. Treat anyone promising guaranteed citations with caution.
