Answer-first content: the structure, schema and tracking we use for AI answers.

Answer engine optimisation is mostly page structure. This is the template every article on this site follows, what it is based on, and how we measure whether it works.

Answer-first content: the structure, schema and tracking we use for AI answers.

AEO sounds like a new discipline. In practice it is one habit: answer the question first, in a form someone else can lift without editing.

What Google actually requires

Google's own documentation is blunt: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, no special optimisations, no AI text files, and no special schema. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Everything below is about being the snippet worth lifting.

The template

  1. Title = the question. Phrase it the way people ask it. Ahrefs found cited titles closely match the prompt.
  2. Answer in the first 40 to 60 words. A complete answer someone could quote without reading further.
  3. Key takeaways. Three or four full-sentence facts. Every article on this site opens with them.
  4. Question-shaped subheadings. Each followed by a direct one or two sentence answer, then the detail.
  5. Numbers and sources. Measured figures, dated, with a link to where they came from.
  6. Tables for comparisons. Engines lift rows cleanly.
  7. A visible FAQ. Three to five real follow-up questions with short answers.
  8. Author, date, sources. A named person with a profile, a visible date, and a source list.

Schema: what helps, honestly

MarkupVerdict
Article with author and datesWorth it. Clarifies who wrote it and when
FAQPageFine to keep, but FAQ rich results are limited in Google; the visible FAQ text is what gets read
Organization and PersonWorth it. Ties authors to real profiles
"AI schema" or llms.txtNot required, per Google; no measured citation lift

Tracking it

  • Search Console. Google says AI feature appearances are included in the Performance report under the Web search type. You can't separate them, but you can watch impressions rise while clicks don't; our zero-click calculator sizes that gap.
  • GA4. The AI assistant channel plus a custom regex. See what GA4's AI channel misses.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools. The AI Performance report shows Copilot citations by page; see our checklist.
  • A prompt panel. Fifty fixed questions, run monthly; here is how to build one.

Answer-first doesn't mean thin. The answer goes first; the depth, data and nuance follow. Pages that only answer get quoted once and never visited.

Questions people ask

What is answer-first content?

Content that puts a complete, quotable answer directly under a question-shaped heading, before the supporting detail, so search engines and AI assistants can lift it cleanly.

Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema.org markup required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard Article, Organization and Person markup still helps clarity.

How do I track AI Overview traffic?

Google includes it in Search Console's Performance report under Web, without a separate filter. Combine that with GA4 AI traffic, Bing's AI Performance report and a fixed prompt panel.
