The Search Console generative AI report: your AI Overview data, explained.
For two years Search Console hid AI Overview traffic inside ordinary web results. Now there is a dedicated report, and a switch that decides whether your site appears in AI features at all.
The Search Console generative AI report answers the question every site owner has asked since AI Overviews launched: how often do my pages actually appear in them? Here is what it shows, what it doesn't, and the control that sits next to it.
What the generative AI performance report shows
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Features covered | AI Overviews and AI Mode (a separate report covers Discover) |
| Metric | Impressions: how often links to your site appeared in a generative AI feature |
| Dimensions | Pages, countries, devices, dates |
| Search types | Web: text-based, and Web: multimodal (Google Lens, Circle to Search, image search) |
| Not included | Clicks, queries, Search Labs experiments |
| Limits | Same as the Performance report, including the 1,000-row table limit; export available |
Google says the data is also still counted in the overall Performance report; this is a separate, dedicated view of your visibility in Google Search Console generative AI features. Pages are reported at their canonical URL.
Google Search Console AI Overview data: how to use it
- Find the pages AI features show most. Sort by impressions. These are the pages Google trusts for AI answers in your topic.
- Compare with clicks. Look up the same pages in the main Performance report. High AI impressions with falling clicks is zero-click in action; our zero-click calculator sizes it.
- Spot missing pages. Important pages with no AI impressions may need clearer answers or better rankings. See how to appear in AI Overviews.
- Segment by country and device before drawing conclusions; AI features roll out unevenly.
Not seeing the report? Google says it usually means your site hasn't had enough impressions in AI features yet, or the site is excluded through the control below.
The Search generative AI control
Under Settings → Search generative AI, each property can choose:
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
| Include (default) | Your content can appear and be linked in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's AI features, and help ground answers |
| Exclude | Your links and content won't appear in those features and can't be used as input for AI responses there |
| Inherit from parent | Follows the parent property's choice |
Google says excluding isn't a ranking signal for the rest of Search, doesn't affect AI training (use Google-Extended for that), and doesn't remove pages from Search (use noindex). Changes generally take a few days.
Should you exclude your site?
For most businesses, no. Excluding removes you from answers your buyers increasingly read, and competitors' content stays. It can make sense for publishers whose content is the product and who are negotiating its use. Check the report first to see what you would give up.
