"Crawled – currently not indexed" on a small site: how to diagnose and fix it.
Google visited the page and chose not to keep it. On a small site, that is usually a quality or duplication signal, not a bug. Here is how to tell which, and what to do.
It is the most common question we get after a site launches: "Google crawled it, so why isn't it indexed?"
What the two statuses mean
| Status | Google's definition | What Google says to do |
|---|---|---|
| Crawled – currently not indexed | The page was crawled but not indexed | It may or may not be indexed in future; no need to resubmit |
| Discovered – currently not indexed | Found but not crawled yet; the crawl was rescheduled to avoid overloading the site | Usually resolves; check server capacity and crawl budget on large sites |
Diagnose
- Export the list from Search Console's Page indexing report and group URLs by type: articles, tags, filters, parameters.
- Look for duplication. Tag pages, parameter URLs, near-identical location pages. Google often declines to index copies.
- Check the content. Would a reader learn something here they couldn't get elsewhere? Thin pages are the usual cause.
- Check internal links. Pages with no or few internal links look unimportant.
- Inspect a few URLs with URL Inspection to confirm Google can render the content and the canonical is what you expect.
Fix
- Improve: add the unique value: data, examples, a tool, first-hand experience.
- Merge: combine overlapping pages into one stronger page and redirect the rest.
- Remove or noindex: tag archives, thin filters and pages that exist only for a keyword.
- Link: add internal links from strong pages to the ones that matter.
- Slow down: publish at a pace you can keep strong. See scaled content abuse.
Validate
After fixing, use "Validate fix" in the report. Google says validation typically takes up to about two weeks, sometimes longer, and that you shouldn't click it again until it succeeds or fails. Not every URL needs to be indexed; validation is optional when the page doesn't deserve to be.
Our working rule: if more than 20–30% of URLs published in the last eight weeks are crawled or discovered but not indexed, we pause new publishing and strengthen what exists. That threshold is a practitioner rule of thumb, not a Google number.
Also make sure Bing sees the same pages; see Bing Webmaster Tools for AI search.
