Bing Webmaster Tools for AI search: a 2026 checklist.
Most teams set up Search Console and forget Bing. In 2026 that means ignoring the index behind Copilot, and the only free report that shows AI citations by page.
Bing's share of human searches is small. Its share of the infrastructure behind AI answers is not.
Why Bing matters for AI
Copilot grounds web answers in Bing's index, and Microsoft offers that index to other AI builders through its "Grounding with Bing Search" service, which replaced the public Bing Search APIs retired on 11 August 2025. ChatGPT's exact sources are contested, but Bing is at least part of the picture.
The checklist
- Verify the site. Importing from Google Search Console is the fastest route. Verify the canonical host (www or not) you actually serve.
- Submit sitemaps with accurate lastmod dates. Bing uses lastmod; don't set every page to today.
- Turn on IndexNow. Ping Bing on every publish and update. Our 40-line Express setup is the one this site runs.
- Check crawl access. Make sure robots.txt, your CDN and any firewall allow Bingbot. Our AI crawler checker tests it.
- Use URL Inspection on your key pages to confirm they are indexed and see what Bing rendered.
- Clear the SEO reports. Bing flags missing or duplicate meta descriptions and titles. These are cheap fixes, and clean snippets are what get lifted.
- Review AI Performance monthly. See below.
Reading the AI Performance report
Bing added the AI Performance report to Webmaster Tools as a public preview in February 2026. Any verified site can see it.
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Total citations | How often your pages were cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers |
| Cited pages | Which URLs are being used; usually a handful dominate |
| Grounding queries | Sample queries the AI used when retrieving your content; Bing's interpretation, not the user's exact words |
Limits worth knowing: no click data, no view of which competitors were cited for the same queries, and exports only as CSV for now. Citations are also lumpy. Search Influence pulled 91 days of data and found 19,717 citations across 86 pages, with one page accounting for 69% of them and daily citations falling 97% from their December peak.
Turn citations into work
- Grounding queries are free keyword research for AI. Write or improve a page for each cluster.
- If one page carries most citations, link from it to the pages you want cited next.
- If citations fall suddenly, check indexing and crawl access before you blame content.
Questions people ask
Does Bing Webmaster Tools show AI citations?
Yes. Since February 2026 its AI Performance report (in preview) shows citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers, which pages were cited, and sample grounding queries.
Does the Bing AI Performance report show clicks?
No. It shows citations, not visits. Use GA4 with an AI traffic channel to see visits from Copilot and other assistants.
Why does Bing matter for AI search?
Microsoft Copilot grounds its answers in Bing's index, and Bing's grounding service feeds other AI products, so pages missing from Bing are missing from those answers.
