Is ChatGPT Search still powered by Bing? What we actually know in 2026.
Half the GEO advice online says ChatGPT retrieves only from Bing. The evidence says the picture is messier, and the practical answer is the same either way.
Ask ten SEO vendors where ChatGPT gets its search results and you'll hear "Bing" from most of them. It was a reasonable answer once. In 2026 it's at best incomplete.
The case for Bing
Microsoft is OpenAI's largest partner, and ChatGPT's early browsing was built on Bing. Seer Interactive compared SearchGPT citations against search results and found 87% matched Bing's top results. That study is the main source behind the "ChatGPT is Bing" rule.
The case against "only Bing"
- Google results via SerpApi. The Information reported that OpenAI used Google search data scraped by SerpApi to help ChatGPT answer real-time questions on news, sports and markets. Court documents from Google's antitrust case showed Google had earlier declined OpenAI's request for direct access to its index.
- OpenAI's own crawler. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler that surfaces websites in ChatGPT search, and says sites that block it won't appear in ChatGPT search answers. A pure Bing pipeline would not need it.
- The Bing API change. Microsoft retired the public Bing Search APIs on 11 August 2025 and pointed developers to "Grounding with Bing Search" inside Azure AI Agents. OpenAI's arrangement is private, so that doesn't tell us what it uses, but the old public pipe is gone.
- New behaviour. Since August 2026 ChatGPT runs many domain-scoped site: searches. Nobody outside OpenAI has shown which index answers them.
Where Bing definitely matters
Microsoft Copilot grounds its web answers in Bing's index, so Copilot visibility is largely Bing visibility. Bing's index also feeds other products through its grounding service. Whatever ChatGPT does, Bing is not optional.
The practical answer
| Do this | Why |
|---|---|
| Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit the sitemap | Copilot and any Bing-grounded system |
| Use IndexNow on every publish and update | Bing learns about changes in minutes, not weeks |
| Verify in Google Search Console | Google results reportedly feed ChatGPT too, and AI Overviews depend on them |
| Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your firewall | OpenAI says blocked sites won't appear in ChatGPT search |
| Track citations, not assumptions | Run a fixed prompt panel and see who actually cites you |

Be wary of any vendor that says ChatGPT retrieves "exclusively" from Bing. The public evidence does not support that, and it leads teams to neglect Google.
Questions people ask
Does ChatGPT use Bing for search?
Partly, by most evidence. Seer found 87% of SearchGPT citations matched Bing's top results, but later reporting says OpenAI also used Google results via SerpApi, and it runs its own crawler.
Does ChatGPT use Google search results?
The Information reported that OpenAI used Google search data obtained through SerpApi for real-time queries. OpenAI has not published details of its search sources.
Do I need Bing Webmaster Tools for AI visibility?
Yes. Microsoft Copilot grounds answers in Bing's index, and Bing may also feed ChatGPT. Verify, submit a sitemap and use IndexNow.
