Is ChatGPT citing my website? Five free ways to check.
There is no "ChatGPT Search Console". But between your analytics, your server logs and a few deliberate prompts, you can see most of what is happening.
Clients often ask this before they ask anything else. The honest answer comes from five places, none of them paid.
1. Ask, systematically
Write 20 to 50 questions your buyers really ask. Run them each month in a fresh session in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, in the same country. Record whether you are named, whether one of your URLs is cited, and who else is. That is your baseline. See the tracker.
2. GA4 referrals
Clicks from ChatGPT usually arrive with source chatgpt.com, and ChatGPT appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to many links. Since May 2026 GA4 has an AI Assistant channel, though published sources disagree on which assistants it covers. A custom channel group from our regex generator gives you a complete definition. Landing pages tell you which pages are being cited.
3. Bing's AI Performance report
For Copilot and Bing AI answers, Bing Webmaster Tools shows citations, cited pages and grounding queries. It doesn't show clicks, but it is the only free per-page citation report from an AI provider today. See our checklist.
4. Server logs
| User agent | What a hit means |
|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI is crawling you for ChatGPT search |
| ChatGPT-User | A ChatGPT user's request caused a fetch of your page, often right before a citation |
| GPTBot | Training crawl; not a citation signal |
| PerplexityBot / Perplexity-User | The same split for Perplexity |
| Claude-SearchBot / Claude-User | The same split for Claude |
No hits from search or user bots at all? Check robots.txt and your firewall with our AI crawler checker.
5. Search Console, for Google's AI
Open the Generative AI performance report: it shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It reports impressions only, so compare those pages' clicks in the main Performance report. Our zero-click calculator estimates the gap.
Put the five together monthly. If prompts show you named, logs show ChatGPT-User hits and GA4 shows chatgpt.com sessions, you are being cited. If none do, start with how AI engines choose sources.
Questions people ask
How do I know if ChatGPT cites my website?
Run your buyers' questions in ChatGPT monthly and record citations, check GA4 for chatgpt.com sessions and utm_source=chatgpt.com, and look for ChatGPT-User and OAI-SearchBot in your server logs.
Does GA4 show ChatGPT traffic?
Yes, usually with source chatgpt.com. GA4 also has an AI Assistant channel since May 2026, and a custom channel group gives you full control over which assistants count.
