ChatGPT stopped citing Reddit in August. Your own docs just got more valuable.
In one week Reddit went from a regular ChatGPT source to a rare one. Google's AI barely moved. Here is what changed, what is still unclear, and what to do about it.
For two years the standard GEO advice included "get discussed on Reddit, because ChatGPT cites it". In August that advice stopped working for ChatGPT, almost overnight.
What the data shows
| Surface | Before (18 Jul to 7 Aug) | After (14 to 17 Aug) | Relative change |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Search | 3.83% | 0.52% | −86.4% |
| Google AI Overviews | 2.37% | 2.10% | −11.3% |
| Google AI Mode | 2.22% | 1.54% | −30.5% |
Figures are Reddit's share of citations, from Promptwatch's tracking. The ChatGPT drop happened inside a week. The Google declines were gradual.
What happened at the same time
On 8 August, the share of ChatGPT's background searches (its "fan-out" queries) that used the site: operator jumped from about 0.37% to 16.8%, and the average number of searches per response rose from about 1.08 to 1.83. In other words, ChatGPT started adding searches scoped to specific domains on top of its general searches.
Promptwatch presents these as moving together. Nobody outside OpenAI has confirmed the cause, and OpenAI has not commented that we have seen. We explain the site: change in detail in ChatGPT's site: queries.
What is still unclear
- Methodology. Promptwatch's post does not publish its prompt count or sample size and says exact percentages vary by method.
- Earlier data points the other way. Tinuiti's Q1 2026 report found Reddit's citation share growing in commercial categories. Both can be true: the change came after.
- Permanence. Retrieval changes get rolled back. Recheck before you rebuild a strategy around one week of data.
What to do
- Check your own numbers. If you tracked cited URLs, compare Reddit URLs before and after 14 August to separate the platform change from anything specific to you.
- Move answers onto your domain. If the best answer to "how do I X with your product" lived in a Reddit thread, write it as a help page or guide on your own site, one question per page.
- Keep Reddit for people and for Google. Reddit still shows up in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and real users still read it. Just stop counting it as a ChatGPT channel.
- Make your site easy to search inside. If ChatGPT is running searches scoped to your domain, pages need clear titles and descriptions that match the question, and they need to be indexed.
This is why we keep telling clients that owned, indexable pages are the asset. Third-party platforms change their relationship with AI engines without notice.
Questions people ask
Did ChatGPT stop citing Reddit?
Largely, for now. Promptwatch measured Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations falling from 3.83% to 0.52% in mid-August 2026, an 86% relative drop.
Does Google AI Overviews still cite Reddit?
Yes. Over the same period Reddit's share in AI Overviews fell only about 11% and in AI Mode about 31%, both gradually.
Should I stop posting on Reddit for AI visibility?
Not entirely. It still matters for Google's AI surfaces and for real users. But for ChatGPT, answers on your own indexable pages are now the more reliable bet.
