Copilot citations disappearing? How to diagnose your Bing AI visibility.
One site watched daily Copilot citations fall 97% from their peak in a few weeks. Spikes and drops are normal. Here is how to tell a normal drop from a problem.
A chart that goes up and then falls off a cliff is alarming. With AI citations it is also common.
What normal looks like
Search Influence pulled 91 days of AI Performance data (November 2025 to February 2026): 19,717 citations across 86 pages, with one page accounting for 69% and the top four for about 90%. Daily citations peaked at 5,804 on 7 December and fell to below 50 by late January, a 97% drop in the daily average. They also estimate one conversation can produce several citation events, so raw totals overstate reach.
Step 1: rule out technical causes
- Are the cited pages still indexed in Bing? Check with URL Inspection in Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Can Bingbot reach them? A new firewall or CDN rule can block it silently. Test with our AI crawler checker.
- Did URLs or canonicals change? A redesign that changed URLs without redirects loses citations.
- Is the content still server-rendered? A move to client-side rendering can empty pages for crawlers.
Step 2: read the grounding queries
Grounding queries are sample queries Copilot used when retrieving your pages; they are Bing's interpretation, not the user's exact words. Compare the peak period with now. If the same queries are still being asked but someone else is cited, you lost ground. If the queries themselves disappeared, the topic cooled off.
Step 3: respond
| Finding | Action |
|---|---|
| Technical issue | Fix it, then use IndexNow to tell Bing |
| Same queries, competitor cited | Compare their page with yours: freshness, specificity, structure; improve and update |
| Topic demand faded | Expected. Build pages for the next set of grounding queries |
| One page carried everything | Link from it to related pages so citations spread |
The AI Performance report shows citations, not visits. Pair it with GA4 AI traffic to see whether citations sent anyone. See GA4's AI channel and our Bing checklist.
Questions people ask
Why did my Copilot citations drop?
Often because demand for the topic faded, but check technical causes first: Bing indexing, crawl blocks, URL or canonical changes, and rendering.
Where can I see Copilot citations?
In Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, which shows citations, cited pages and grounding queries for Copilot and Bing AI answers.
Does the AI Performance report show clicks from Copilot?
No. It shows citations only. Use GA4 with an AI traffic channel to see visits.
