Agent search optimization: how AI agents pick the site they act on.
When an AI agent shops, books or compares for someone, it runs its own searches, opens a handful of sites and finishes the task on one. Here is how that search works, and what decides whether it ends on yours.
Agent search optimization is the work of making sure that when an AI agent searches on someone's behalf, your site is on its shortlist and is the one it can actually act on. It sits on top of SEO and GEO, and it is quickly becoming the part most sites are missing.
What is agent search optimization?
A person searching reads a page of results and clicks. An agent searching for a person does something different: it turns one request ("book a table for four near the office on Friday") into several searches, opens the most promising pages, compares them and then tries to complete the task. Agent search optimization, sometimes called agentic search optimization, is the practice of winning that whole loop, not just the first click.
The agents doing this are already mainstream. Google added an agent called auto browse to Chrome in January 2026 and extended it to Android in August. Anthropic made Claude in Chrome generally available to paid plans in August 2026. Perplexity runs its own agentic browser, Comet. See our guide to agentic browsing SEO for how each one reads a page.
How AI agents search: the three stages
| Stage | What the agent does | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Search | Runs several queries, often through a search index, to build a shortlist | Rankings, AI citations, clear titles and descriptions |
| 2. Read | Opens each shortlisted page and extracts facts: price, availability, policies, steps | Server-rendered text, structured data, visible prices, consistent facts |
| 3. Act | Fills forms, clicks buttons, books or buys on the chosen site | Labelled fields, real buttons, no blocking CAPTCHA, guest checkout |
Classic SEO mostly covers stage one. GEO covers being named in the AI answer. Agent search optimization adds stages two and three, where many sites quietly fail: the agent finds them, cannot read the price because it is in an image, and moves on to a competitor whose page it can parse.
Agent search optimization vs SEO vs GEO
| SEO | GEO | Agent search optimization | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reader | Search crawlers and people | AI answer engines | AI agents acting for a person |
| Win condition | The click | Being named or cited | The completed task |
| Typical failure | Poor ranking | Not mentioned | Agent cannot read or finish the flow |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks | Share of answer | Agent visits, task success |
Why agents skip sites
- They cannot read the page. Content that only appears after heavy JavaScript, prices in images and hidden plan details all look empty to an agent. Google's web.dev guide says agents rely on screenshots, the DOM and the accessibility tree together.
- The facts disagree. If the pricing page, structured data and a third-party listing show three different prices, the agent has no reason to trust any of them.
- They cannot act. Unlabelled inputs, buttons built from styled divs, hover-only menus and aggressive bot challenges stop a task halfway.
- They are blocked. Bot protection set to block everything that is not a known browser also blocks the agents your buyers use.
Accessibility is the best predictor we know of. In a study by the accessibility vendor AudioEye, agents completed 96% of tasks on an accessible version of a site and 31% on an inaccessible one. Treat the exact numbers as a vendor's, but the direction matches what we see in testing.
Agent search optimization: the five things to fix first
- Get on the shortlist. Keep the SEO and GEO basics: crawlable pages, clear titles, answer-first content and mentions on the sites AI engines trust.
- Make facts readable. Prices, plans, availability and policies as text on the page, matching your structured data. Check with our agent pricing checker.
- Make actions possible. Real buttons and links, a label on every field, clear errors and guest checkout. Check with the agent form checker.
- Let the right agents in. Review bot protection and CAPTCHA rules so user-triggered agents reach pricing, booking and checkout. Our AI agent readiness checklist covers the settings.
- Measure it. Count agent visits and test task success every month. See how to measure AI agent traffic.
You do not need a new protocol to start. Most of agent search optimization is good, accessible web practice applied to the three tasks that make you money. Protocols such as WebMCP and agentic commerce feeds come after.
Questions people ask
What is agent search optimization?
It is the practice of making your site easy for AI agents to find, read and act on when they search and complete tasks for a person. It builds on SEO and GEO and adds readable facts and forms an agent can complete.
Is agentic search optimization the same thing?
Yes. Agent search optimization, agentic search optimization and AI agent search optimization all describe optimising for AI agents that search and act. We also call the wider practice assistive agent optimization (AAO).
Do I still need SEO if agents do the searching?
Yes. Agents usually start from a search index or an AI answer, so ranking and being cited still decide whether you make the shortlist.
How do I know if AI agents can use my site?
Pick your three money tasks, such as finding pricing, booking a demo or buying, and run them through an agent like Claude in Chrome or Chrome auto browse. Then check forms and prices with our agent form and pricing checkers.
