Agentic commerce optimization: how to get AI shopping agents to pick your product.

AI shopping agents choose from product data before they ever see your design. Here is what OpenAI's product feed and Google's UCP checkout actually require, and the order to fix things in.

Agentic commerce optimization: how to get AI shopping agents to pick your product.

Agentic commerce optimization, sometimes shortened to ACO, is the work of making your products the ones AI shopping agents find, trust and buy. An agent comparing three jackets does not admire your photography. It reads your product data, checks price and stock, and picks the option it can verify and complete.

How AI shopping agents choose

  1. Retrieve. The agent pulls candidate products from feeds and search indexes: ChatGPT from merchant product feeds, Google from Merchant Center.
  2. Compare. It checks price, availability, shipping, returns and reviews, on the feed and on your product page.
  3. Act. It either hands the person to your checkout or, where supported, completes checkout itself.

Each step filters out products with missing or conflicting data. That makes data quality, not design, the first lever.

What OpenAI's product feed requires

OpenAI's commerce product feed specification lists nine required fields for each product:

FieldWhy agents need it
item_idA stable ID so updates match the right product
titleWhat the product is, in plain words
descriptionDetails the agent compares on
urlWhere the person, or agent, goes to buy
brandLets agents match brand-specific requests
seller_nameWho the buyer is dealing with
image_urlShown to the person in the answer
availabilityRows with a missing or unrecognised value are rejected
priceThe main comparison point

Search eligibility is on by default; checkout eligibility is off by default and only applies where checkout is enabled for the integration. The spec says to update the feed when a sale starts or ends and when stock changes, rather than on a fixed schedule. Note that ChatGPT Instant Checkout was reportedly ended in March 2026, so treat the feed mainly as a discovery channel. See our guide to agentic commerce protocols.

What Google's UCP checkout requires

  • An active Merchant Center account with complete, current product data.
  • The native_commerce attribute on each product you want eligible. Only listings with it show the Buy button.
  • A payment provider that can accept a Google Pay payment token.
  • Acceptance into the early access programme, which Google's help page (published 2 March 2026) described as US only.

Agentic commerce optimization: the fix order

  1. Clean the feed. Every required field filled, prices and stock synced with the site, identifiers (GTIN or MPN) where you have them.
  2. Match the page to the feed. Same price, stock and variant names in visible text and in Product and Offer structured data. Check with our agent pricing checker.
  3. Publish policies. Shipping, returns and warranty on crawlable pages, in plain language agents can quote.
  4. Make checkout agent-friendly. Guest checkout, labelled fields, clear errors, no surprise CAPTCHA. Test with the agent form checker.
  5. Opt in where you qualify. Submit the ChatGPT feed and apply for UCP early access, or turn on your platform's agentic features if you use Shopify or similar.

Agentic commerce changes month to month. One flagship checkout has already been switched off. Build on data quality and a solid checkout, which pay off on every channel, and treat each protocol as an add-on.

Questions people ask

What is agentic commerce optimization?

Agentic commerce optimization (ACO) is the practice of making your products easy for AI shopping agents to find, compare and buy, through complete product feeds, readable product pages and a checkout agents can finish.

How do I get my products into ChatGPT shopping?

Submit a product feed that follows OpenAI's commerce feed specification, with the nine required fields filled for every item, and keep price and availability updated when they change.

What is the native_commerce attribute?

It is a Merchant Center product attribute Google uses for Universal Commerce Protocol checkout. Only listings with it can show the Buy button in Google's agentic checkout, which is in early access.

Do small stores need agentic commerce optimization?

The basics, yes: an accurate feed, matching product pages and a simple checkout. These help in Google Shopping and AI answers today. Protocol work can wait until your platform supports it.
