Gemini now installs Android apps. Here is the checklist for being the one it picks.

Play search shows a user twenty apps and lets them choose. A Gemini answer usually names two or three, and one has a button next to it. Being in that short list is a new kind of ranking.

What changed

At Google I/O 2026, Google showed the Gemini app recommending Android apps and installing them directly, with no detour through the Play Store. Today this happens mostly when users ask for an app. Google said it will extend to answers about content, for example recommending a streaming app when someone asks where to watch an event. Later, deeper integrations through AppFunctions are expected.

According to Yellowhead's analysis, the inputs include Play Store metadata, website content, reviews and structured data. That makes it closer to GEO than to classic ASO: the model has to understand what your app is for before it can recommend it.

The 12-point checklist

Be understood

1. Write one positioning sentence ("A budgeting app for Indian households that tracks UPI spends automatically") and use it in the short description, the first line of the description and the first paragraph of your website.
2. Pick the right category and tags. A model that sees "Productivity" and a description about fitness gets confused.
3. Name the use cases users type. "Split rent with flatmates", not "seamless shared finances". Gemini matches requests, and requests are concrete.
4. State the constraints. Price model, languages, offline support, age range, Android version. These are the facts a recommender uses to rule you in or out.

Be readable

1. Make the website crawlable without JavaScript. If the content only appears after scripts run, many AI fetchers see an empty page. Check with our AI crawler checker.
2. Don't block Google's AI by accident. Google documents a separate Google-Extended robots.txt token that controls use of your content for Gemini. Decide on it deliberately rather than inheriting a template.
3. Add MobileApplication structured data on the app's web page, with the Play Store link, operating system, category, price and rating if you can show it.
4. Link both ways. The website field in Play Console points to your site; your site links to the Play listing.

Be trusted

1. Keep the rating healthy and recent. Google Play weights recent reviews; see how the rating really moves.
2. Earn reviews that describe use cases. "Great for tracking my shop's daily sales" tells a model more than "nice app".
3. Get mentioned outside your own properties. Comparison articles and lists are what AI assistants cite when recommending apps.
4. Keep Android vitals under the bad-behaviour thresholds. A recommender has no reason to send users to an app Play itself is demoting. See the 0.47% ANR line.

Test before you guess

Write 20 prompts a real user might type ("best app to learn tables for a 7 year old", "app to track UPI spending"). Run them in Gemini each month on an English-language Android device, and record which apps are named and whether yours is. That panel is your ranking report for this channel.
