ASO + SEO for apps with websites: one keyword strategy for Play and Google.

Your store listing and your website target the same people with different words, owned by different teams. In 2026 that costs you twice: once in search, once in AI answers.

ASO + SEO for apps with websites: one keyword strategy for Play and Google.

The growth team rewrites the store listing. Marketing rewrites the website. Nobody checks whether they now describe two different apps.

Why one strategy

  • Same people, two places. Someone researching "best invoice app for freelancers" may start in Google and finish in the Play Store.
  • AI reads both. Ask Play and the Gemini app read your listing and your website; ChatGPT and AI Overviews read your website and your store pages.
  • Content compounds. A guide that ranks in Google can send visitors to the store listing with intent already formed.

Build one keyword map

  1. Collect terms from both sides. Play Console search terms, Search Console queries and your ASO keyword research.
  2. Group by intent, not by wording: "GST invoice app", "make GST bill" and "tax invoice maker" are one intent.
  3. Assign each intent a home. Some belong in the store (feature and use-case terms). Some belong on the web (how-to and comparison questions). Many belong in both.
  4. Write the words once. One positioning sentence and one name per feature, used in both places.
Intent typeStoreWebsite
Category ("budget app")Title, short descriptionHome page, app landing page
Feature ("split bills")Description, screenshotsFeature page or section
How-to ("how to track UPI spending")RarelyGuide or help article
Comparison ("X vs Y")No (policy)Comparison page
Brand ("YourApp review")Reviews and repliesAbout, press and reviews pages

Connect the two

  • Link the Play listing's website field to the app's page, and the page to the listing.
  • Add MobileApplication structured data to the app's page.
  • Server-render the facts, so search and AI crawlers can read them.
  • Use a custom store listing URL for links from guides, so you can see which content sends installs.

Measure together

Review store search terms and Search Console queries in the same meeting, by intent. If an intent ranks on the web but converts poorly in the store, the listing is the problem; if the store ranks but the web doesn't, write the page. This is how we run ASO and SEO as one team. Questions people ask

Should ASO and SEO use the same keywords?

They should share one keyword map grouped by intent, with each intent assigned to the store, the website or both, and the same feature words used everywhere.

Does my app website affect Google Play?

Ask Play and the Gemini app read your website when describing your app, so inconsistencies between site and listing can surface in Google Play's AI answers.

What keywords belong on an app website rather than the store?

How-to and comparison questions, which store listings can't answer well and store policies restrict, plus your category and feature terms.
