Keyword-targeted custom store listings: build for intent clusters, not single keywords.

Google Play can show a tailored listing to people who arrived from a specific search. Used well, it is the biggest conversion lever in the console. Our best example converted at 31.7% against 18.7%.

Keyword-targeted custom store listings: build for intent clusters, not single keywords.

Most apps show the same listing to everyone. Someone searching "invoice app for freelancers" and someone searching "GST billing" want different first lines. Google Play lets you give them that.

What custom store listings can target

Google Play allows up to 50 custom store listings per app. Your existing listing becomes the default. Each custom listing can target one of these audiences:

AudienceNotes
Country or regionOne custom listing per country at a time
Search keywordsUsers who found the app with specific search terms
Pre-registrationUsers who can pre-register
Churned or lapsed usersUninstalled, or not opened in 28 days; not for new apps
Google Ads trafficUsed as a landing page for ads campaigns
Unique URLA &listing= parameter you can link to from anywhere

Contact details, privacy policy and category are shared with the default listing, and custom listings aren't translated automatically.

Why our best listing was a custom one

In our 440K MAU case study, a market-specific custom listing converted at 31.7% from about 1.7 million visitors, against 18.7% for the default listing, both on the legacy conversion metric. That listing was country-targeted, but the lesson carries over: the closer the first screen is to what the visitor came for, the more of them install.

Clusters, not keywords

Admiral Media's guidance matches what we see: keyword-targeted listings work better when they target intent clusters than when each targets a single keyword.

  1. Export the search terms that bring you visitors from Play Console's acquisition reports.
  2. Group them by intent. "GST invoice", "GST bill maker" and "tax invoice app" are one cluster. "Freelance invoice" and "invoice for designers" are another.
  3. Pick clusters with traffic and a distinct need. If the listing would read the same, it doesn't need its own page.
  4. Select the keywords in the custom listing, and review the spelling variants and translations Play offers.
  5. Rewrite the top of the listing for that intent: first screenshot, short description and first lines of the description.
  6. Wait for data. Listings need enough visitors before they show in the performance breakdown. Compare each listing's CTR with the default over the same period.

Using Gemini for drafts

Play Console can offer to generate descriptions with Gemini, built from your published default listing and the search terms you chose, and you can insert, edit or discard them. Google showed a one-click version at I/O 2026. The drafts are a fast start, but they inherit the default listing's weaknesses and tend to be generic. Rewrite the first two lines yourself.

Compare custom listings using the same metric and period. Since mid-2026 Play reports store listing CTR, not conversion rate, so older numbers don't compare.

Questions people ask

How many custom store listings can I create on Google Play?

Up to 50. Your existing listing becomes the default, shown wherever no custom listing applies.

Can I target a custom store listing by search keyword?

Yes. Choose "Search keywords" as the audience and select terms that already bring traffic, including spelling variants and translations Play suggests.

Should I build one custom listing per keyword?

Usually not. Group keywords by intent and build one listing per cluster, so each gets enough traffic to measure and improve.
