Does keyword density matter on Google Play?

Every ASO blog has a number: 2%, 3%, five mentions. Google has never published one, and its policy actively punishes repetition. Here is what to do instead.

Does keyword density matter on Google Play?

Unlike the App Store, Google Play reads your full description for search. That is why the density myth survives. It is still a myth.

Where the number comes from

Advice on keyword density in Google Play descriptions ranges from "2–3%" to "there is no magic number", and none of the versions we found came with data. It is a carry-over from early web SEO, when search engines counted words. Modern ranking systems, including Google Play's, use far richer signals.

What Google's policy says

Google Play's metadata policy prohibits repetitive or unrelated keywords and references, word blocks and vertical or horizontal word lists, and special characters or ALL CAPS used to manipulate search. Excessive length or repetition can itself be a violation. Chasing a density target pushes you towards exactly what the policy describes.

What actually helps

FactorWhy it matters
PlacementTitle (30 characters) and short description carry the most weight; the first lines of the description come next
CoverageEach feature and use case people search for is described somewhere, in their words
Natural variantsRelated phrases ("budget", "expense tracker", "spending") cover more searches than one phrase repeated
ConversionListings that convert keep ranking; stuffed descriptions read badly and convert worse
Readability for AIAsk Play and Gemini read the description; clear sentences are what they quote

A practical method

  1. List the 10 to 20 search phrases that matter, from Play Console search terms and your research.
  2. Put the main phrase in the title and short description.
  3. Give each important feature its own sentence or short paragraph, using the phrase people search for.
  4. Read it aloud. If a sentence exists only to repeat a keyword, delete it.
  5. Check with our free ASO checker, then measure with Play Console search terms over the following weeks.

We plan to test description changes across the apps we work on and publish what we see. Until then, the honest answer is: no density target, write for coverage. See also the short description and how to choose keywords.

Questions people ask

What is the best keyword density for a Google Play description?

There isn't one. Google has never published a target and its metadata policy prohibits repetitive keywords. Place your main phrase in the title and short description and cover each feature naturally.

Does Google Play index the full description?

Yes. Google Play uses the full description for search, unlike the App Store, which uses a separate keyword field.

Can repeating keywords get my app rejected?

It can. Google Play's metadata policy lists repetitive or unrelated keywords and word lists as violations.
