The Google Play short description: 80 characters that rank and convert.
It is the only line of text many visitors read before deciding. It is indexed for search. And most apps spend it on an adjective.
Eighty characters. Half of all short descriptions we audit spend twenty of them on "The best", "Amazing" or "Ultimate".
What the short description does
- It converts. It sits near the top of the listing, and for many visitors it is the only text they read.
- It ranks. Google Play indexes it with the title and full description.
- It feeds AI. Ask Play and Gemini read your listing; a clear one-line statement of what the app does is exactly what they need.
What the policy forbids
Google Play's metadata policy doesn't give the short description its own rules, but its general rules apply. It prohibits repetitive or unrelated keywords, deceptive claims such as "best game ever", ALL CAPS that isn't part of a brand, special characters used to manipulate ranking, and unattributed testimonials. Ranking and promotional claims ("#1", "App of the year", "10% off") are banned outright in the title, icon and developer name; keep them out of the short description too.
A formula
[What it does, with your main keyword] + [for whom] + [one proof or differentiator]
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| "The best and most amazing budget app ever!!" | "Track UPI spends and bills automatically. Built for Indian households." |
| "Fun learning for kids" | "Maths practice for ages 6 to 10. No ads, works offline." |
| "Invoice app #1 for business" | "Create GST invoices in 30 seconds and share them on WhatsApp." |
The "after" versions are specific enough to rank for a real phrase, to rule out the wrong user, and to give a model a fact to repeat. The examples are illustrative.
Rules of thumb
- Put the main keyword phrase in the first half, written the way users say it.
- Use a number when it is true and meaningful ("30 seconds", "ages 6 to 10").
- Don't repeat the title word for word; use the space for a second keyword phrase.
- Match the claim to the first screenshot. A visitor who reads one and sees the other should feel they agree.
- Write a version per custom store listing. A keyword-targeted listing should open with that intent.
Test it
Store listing experiments can test the short description. Run one variant at a time against the current line, for at least a week and until Play reports a result, and keep the winner only if it holds. Our free ASO checker counts characters as you type and checks the short description alongside the rest of the listing.
Questions people ask
How long can a Google Play short description be?
80 characters.
Does the short description affect Google Play ranking?
Yes. Google Play indexes it for search along with the title and full description, so include your main keyword phrase naturally.
Can I use "best" or "#1" in my short description?
Avoid it. Google Play's metadata policy prohibits deceptive claims and repetitive keywords, and bans ranking claims like "#1" in key listing fields.
