Guided Search on Google Play: ranking when organic results start on screen 4.
For broad searches, Google Play now shows ads, Gemini-written lists and follow-up prompts before the classic results. Position one isn't the top of the page any more.
You can rank first for "fitness apps" and still be invisible to most people who search it. On Google Play, the first result is no longer the first thing users see.
What Guided Search is
Guided Search has been rolling out since September 2025. When someone types a broad query, Play suggests narrower ones: "fighting games" might offer "arcade fighting games", with previews of each. For games, Play can also show "Game Highlights", visual cards built from metadata and user reviews.
The new page order
AppTweak's Google I/O 2026 write-up describes the result page for broad, conversational queries like this:
| Screen | What appears |
|---|---|
| 1 | Paid ads |
| 1 to 2 | AI-generated lists labelled "Researched with Gemini" |
| 3 | Follow-up prompts such as "Dive deeper with Ask Play" |
| 4 onward | Traditional organic results |
Rollout is server-side and mostly on English-language devices, so what you see depends on device, language and market. Check on a real phone in each market you care about.
What this changes for ASO
- Head terms lose value. Ranking for "budget app" matters less if the page is AI lists before it gets to you. Specific queries ("budget app for couples") are less likely to trigger the AI layer and convert better.
- Sub-intents become the target. Guided Search splits a broad query into narrower intents. Your listing has to make clear which one you serve.
- AI lists read metadata and reviews. Yellowhead notes visibility here depends on specific, structured metadata rather than individual keyword rankings.
- Branded search grows in value. People who search your name skip the AI layer. Everything that builds brand recall, inside and outside the store, now feeds ASO.
How to adapt your listing
- Name the sub-category. If you are an "arcade fighting game", say exactly that, early in the description.
- Describe features in user words. "Plays offline", "two-player on one phone", "no account needed". These are the facts an AI list uses to sort apps.
- Shape review themes. Fix what reviews complain about and reply; Play summarises review themes, and Game Highlights draw on them. See how the rating moves.
- Build keyword-targeted custom listings for the specific searches you can win. See our guide.
- Write for Ask Play too. The follow-up prompts lead into Ask Play, which reads the same description.
How to measure it
Keyword ranking tools still report positions, but position 1 on screen 4 is not what it used to be. Watch Play Console's search traffic and store listing CTR by query, and track branded vs generic search visitors separately. Google also said at I/O that new reach metrics and a redesigned traffic-source attribution are in development, with no date given.
Questions people ask
What is Guided Search on Google Play?
A Google Play search feature, rolling out since September 2025, that suggests narrower sub-queries for broad searches and previews results for each, with Game Highlights for games.
Why did my Google Play search traffic drop when my ranking didn't?
For broad queries, ads, Gemini-generated lists and Ask Play prompts can now appear before organic results, so a high ranking may sit several screens down.
How do I optimise for Guided Search?
Make your listing clear about the specific sub-category and features you serve, keep review themes positive, and target specific searches with keyword-targeted custom store listings.
