Google Play promotional content for small apps, not just big games.

Most guides to Play's promotional content feature big games and big events. Smaller apps can use it too, if they have something genuinely new to say and submit it properly.

Google Play promotional content for small apps, not just big games.

If your app ships a real update every month, you already have promotional content. Most small teams just never submit it.

What it is

Promotional content (formerly LiveOps) lets you publish cards for time-bound moments: an offer, a major update, an event or a crossover. They appear on your app's details page and, when they meet Google's quality bar, can be shown on other Google Play surfaces where people browse.

Who can use it

Access differs for apps and games. For apps, promotional content is available when the app meets Google's eligibility criteria, shown in Play Console. For games, Google is moving these features into the Google Play Games Level Up programme. Check what your console offers before planning a calendar.

The rules that decide approval

RuleWhat it means
New and noteworthyA real change or time-bound event. No evergreen features or routine content
Open to all usersUnless clearly described; "new user" offers can target new users
Live in the app at the same timeThe event must run in-app while the card runs
Clear copySay what it is, why users should care and how to take part; requirements go in the description
Clean imagesAvoid text such as logos, slogans or event names in the image

Ideas that work for small apps

  • A major feature release. "Hindi voice input is here" is new, user-facing and easy to describe.
  • A seasonal event. Exam-season practice packs, Diwali budgeting templates, a festival theme in a game.
  • A new-user offer. A first-month discount for new subscribers, following the offer eligibility guidelines.
  • A content drop timed to demand. The Gyan Studios kids titles timed updates to TV seasons, when searches rose about 300%. That is exactly the kind of moment a promotional card is for.

Timing

You can submit an event up to 60 days before it starts. Google recommends submitting at least four days before the start date so approval doesn't delay it. Build a simple quarterly calendar of releases and seasonal moments, and submit each one a week ahead.

Measure it

Play Console reports on your events. Compare store listing visitors, CTR and re-engagement during the event with the same period before it. For apps with a lapsed audience, promotional content plus a churned-user custom listing is a cheap win-back channel.
