How to write help center pages that AI assistants cite.
When someone asks ChatGPT how to do something with your product, it needs a page to quote. Since August, it is more likely to look on your own domain for one. Most help centers aren't built to be found.
Your support team writes the most useful content on your domain. It is often the least visible to search engines and AI.
Why help pages matter more now
In August 2026, ChatGPT started running many searches scoped to specific domains with the site: operator, and Reddit's share of its citations collapsed. When a model looks for "how to cancel an annual plan" on your domain, your help page is the candidate. We covered both changes in ChatGPT's site: queries and ChatGPT stopped citing Reddit.
Why most help centers aren't cited
- Not readable. Articles loaded by a JavaScript widget can look empty to crawlers that don't run scripts.
- Not indexed. Help centers on separate subdomains often lack sitemaps or are blocked in robots.txt.
- Vague titles. "Billing" doesn't match "how do I get a GST invoice?".
- Too much per page. One long page per area buries each answer.
- Behind login. If the answer needs an account to read, no assistant can quote it.
A page template that gets quoted
- One question per page, titled exactly as users ask it: "How to download a GST invoice".
- Answer in the first two lines. "Go to Settings → Billing → Invoices and tap Download. Invoices are available for the last 24 months."
- Numbered steps that match the current interface labels.
- State limits and exceptions plainly: plans, platforms, regions.
- Show a "last updated" date and keep it honest.
- Link related questions, so a model fanning out on your domain finds the next answer.
Technical checklist
- Server-render articles; test with our AI crawler checker.
- Allow search bots like OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot; see robots.txt for AI crawlers.
- Include the help center in your sitemap with accurate lastmod, and submit it to Google and Bing.
- Run
site:searches for your top ten questions in Google and Bing. If the right page isn't first, fix the title and description.
Wrong answers get quoted as confidently as right ones. When the product changes, update the help page in the same release, or assistants will keep giving users the old steps.
Questions people ask
Do AI assistants use help center pages?
Yes. When users ask how to do something with a product, assistants search for pages that answer it, and since August 2026 ChatGPT often searches within specific domains.
How should help center articles be structured for AI?
One question per page with a literal title, the answer in the first two lines, numbered steps matching the current product, stated limits, and an honest updated date.
Why isn't my help center showing up in ChatGPT?
Common causes are JavaScript-only rendering, missing sitemaps or robots.txt blocks on the help subdomain, vague titles, and content behind a login.
