Which Indian languages should you localize your Play listing into first?
Global "which language first" guides stop at Hindi. India has a dozen languages with tens of millions of speakers each. Here is how to choose the order from data, not habit.
Most teams add Hindi and stop. For an app whose users are in Chennai or Kolkata, that is the wrong first language.
The national picture
The 2011 Census remains the most complete count of first languages in India. The largest:
| Language | First-language share (2011) | Main regions |
|---|---|---|
| Hindi | 43.6% | North and central India |
| Bengali | 8.0% | West Bengal, Tripura |
| Marathi | 6.9% | Maharashtra |
| Telugu | 6.7% | Andhra Pradesh, Telangana |
| Tamil | 5.7% | Tamil Nadu |
Hindi's share rises well above half when second and third languages are counted, but that also means most Indians outside the Hindi belt are reading it as a second language. Bengali, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil each have tens of millions of first-language speakers.
What top apps do
AppTweak's look at India's top-10 charts found Hindi listings for 8 of 10 Music & Audio apps, 4 of 10 Finance apps and 3 of 10 Casual Games. Apps that go beyond Hindi, such as Spotify and Times of India, typically add Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Malayalam and Telugu.
Decide your order
- Fix English (India) first. Many users keep their phones in English, including speakers of other languages. This listing reaches the most people. See ASO for India in 2026.
- Check where your users are. Play Console shows installs and visitors by country; your analytics or backend usually shows state or city. Rank states by users.
- Map states to languages. A big Tamil Nadu share points to Tamil; Maharashtra to Marathi; West Bengal to Bengali.
- Weigh the category. Content-led apps (music, news, video) and trust-led apps (finance, health) gain most from local-language listings.
- Check the app itself. A Tamil listing for an English-only app sets the wrong expectation. Localize the app first, or say plainly which languages it supports.
- Add one language at a time and measure its listing CTR and installs against the English (India) listing over the same period.
Write it properly
- Use a native speaker who knows the category, not machine translation of marketing copy.
- Keep familiar English words in English ("free", "delivery"), as top apps do.
- Localize screenshots, not just text.
- For Hindi specifically, read when a Hindi listing helps and Hinglish keywords.
Questions people ask
Which Indian language should I localize my app into first?
Usually Hindi if your users are in north and central India, but check your own state data. If most users are in one southern or eastern state, that state's language may come first.
What are the most spoken languages in India?
By the 2011 Census first-language counts: Hindi (43.6%), Bengali (8.0%), Marathi (6.9%), Telugu (6.7%) and Tamil (5.7%).
Should I localize my Play listing if my app is only in English?
Be careful. A localized listing can set the wrong expectation. Either localize the app or state clearly in the listing which languages the app supports.
