ASO for utility apps vs games: what actually differs on Google Play.
The fundamentals are the same: be found, then convert. But games have their own programme, their own surfaces and different buyers. Here is what changes.
Our portfolio has both: kids quiz games and client utility apps. The same listing playbook doesn't work for both.
Side by side
| Utility apps | Games | |
|---|---|---|
| How people search | Task and use case ("scan PDF", "split bills") | Genre, mechanic, theme, characters ("arcade fighting", "word puzzle") |
| What sells | The outcome: "send a GST invoice in 30 seconds" | The experience: gameplay, art, the hook in the first seconds |
| First screenshot | The main result, with a short caption | Real gameplay; video often matters more |
| Extra Play surfaces | Promotional content (if eligible), custom listings | Level Up benefits, Game Highlights in Guided Search, events, rewards |
| Update rhythm | Feature releases | Content drops and live events |
| Rating drivers | Reliability, does it do the job | Fun, fairness, performance, monetisation feel |
Level Up: the games-only programme
Google revamped Level Up as a voluntary programme with "rate card" benefits, with enrollment through Play Console from 1 September 2026. Its guidelines cover three themes: a consistent experience, reach across screens, and stable, smooth sessions. Requirements include integrating Play Games Services, at least 10 achievements, game stats, cloud save, distribution on Google Play Games on PC, and performance and stability targets on reference devices. Games mainly for players under 13 are exempt from many of the feature requirements.
Benefits are described on Google's Level Up programme page; check it in Play Console for the current list.
Search works differently
- Games: Guided Search splits broad queries like "fighting games" into sub-genres and shows Game Highlights built from metadata and reviews. Name your sub-genre and mechanic precisely. See Guided Search.
- Apps: Searches are tasks. Feature names in user words, and keyword-targeted custom listings per task cluster, do most of the work.
- Both: Character, brand and IP searches can be large for games, as our kids titles showed, but only use names you have the right to.
Quality is a ranking issue for both
Android vitals thresholds apply to every app; see the 0.47% ANR line and per-device thresholds. For games, smoothness is the product: on a live game we work with, the rating rose +0.48★ in 28 days while every core vital improved. See the case study.
Level Up requirements and dates are changing through 2027. Re-read Google's Level Up guidelines before planning a roadmap around them.
Questions people ask
Is ASO different for games and apps?
The fundamentals are the same, but games are searched by genre and mechanic, sell on gameplay video and screenshots, and have games-only surfaces and programmes such as Level Up and Game Highlights.
What is Google Play's Level Up programme?
A voluntary programme for games with rate-card benefits, open for enrollment in Play Console from 1 September 2026. It requires features like Play Games Services, achievements and cloud save, and sets stability and performance targets.
Do games need different screenshots from apps?
Usually. Games should show real gameplay and lean on video; utility apps should show the result the user gets, with short captions.
